Many people think that the battery is what keeps the car running. However, the purpose of the battery is to start the car. After that, the car needs some way to recharge the battery. That is what the alternator is designed to do. Otherwise, the battery would simply run out of juice just like the battery in your child’s Christmas toy.

The alternator works like a hydroelectric dam with spinning wheels inside of copper coils that generate an electrical field. Sometimes an alternator may fail all at once, and sometimes it gives you signs of its ultimate demise. One of the first signs is if your GEN or ALT light comes on.

It is a good idea to have your alternator checked on a regular basis. Even if your alternator is not giving you signs of trouble, bring it in to Ray Laks Acura of Buffalo just to be safe.
